1. Antigua and Barbuda
11 hrs
Why?
Antigua and Barbuda is our top pick for 2021, and the gateway to the Caribbean. It's got everything we're looking for in a destination for next year - sun, sea and safety! As a Commonwealth country it's perhaps more exotic, and a fair bit warmer, than you might ever consider a home away from home but it has that wonderful blend of the familiar and the exciting thast makes for a truly great holiday.
When to go
Peak tourist season on the islands is December to April, when the tempertures are pleasantly warm rather than hot and US and European tourists come to escape dreary winters.
In December and January especially the islands are at their most lucious and green, so you're not just getting away for some winter sun but seeing the place at its sparkling best.
July to November is the quietest time, apart from carnival in August. If you want the place relatively to yourself we recommend a September or October break - plus in October sea turtles nest on the beaches and you can spend a pleasant day or two watching these gentle creatures come and go.

Don't miss
Just 100 squre miles of island hides a whole world of things to see and do, from rainforests in the interior to hundreds of world-class beaches from which you can sail, kayak, snorkell, dive or simply watch the world go by.
Antigua drives on the left and the roads are quiet, so to explore the island we recommend picking up a car for at least part of your visit and seeing where the road takes you.
Finally, one of the two eponymous islands that make up this beautiful Caribbean destination, Barbuda, was all but destroyed by hurricane Irma in 2017, with the residents relocated to the main island. Getting money into the local economy therefore has the potential to benefit to the rebuilding and recovery efforts.
2. El Hierro
5 hr 15 min (depending on connecting flight from Tenerife)
Why?
Everyone loves the Canary Islands, but most only visit Tenerife, Lanzarote or Gran Canaria. A few might venture off to Fuerteventura - but even some Canary regular may have not even heard of El Hierro. So this year why not visit a lesser-known Canary Island and escape the crowds.
When to go
One of the reasons the Canary Islands are so well-loved is their year-round good climate! There's not really a bad time to go - even in winter the temperature barely falls below 20°. The warmest driest months are between June and September, when we expect travel to be well and truly up and running - and unlike the other islands you are unlikely to find El Hierro crowded even if you do visit at a peak time.
Don't miss
If you've read any of our Canary Island articles, you'll know we love El Hierro for its natural beauty. It's a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and is home to a number of endemic species - such as the El Hierro giant lizard.
El Hierro is a great spot for diving, and you'll see a host of aquatic life and at the right time of year you may even see manta rays, dolphins, whales and sharks.
There's no big tourism here - be prepared to really get stuck into nature, hike the beautiful trails, swim in natural pools and simply enjoy the great outdoors.
3. Turkey
4 hr 15 min
Why?
Whether you head to where east meets west in Istanbul, or relax on a beach on the Turkish riviera - there's something for every holiday here.
When to go
Southern Turkey enjoys year round good weather - as you'd expect from a Mediterranean resort. The busiest months are as expected June to September - perfect for those who want to sit on the beach! If you want it to be a little less crowded then head there on the shoulder season - whether that's late spring or late summer.
The further east you travel the more extreme the temperatures become - with highs of over 40° in summer and bitter snow in winter. So bear that in mind if you're heading in land to palces such as Cappadocia.
Don't miss
The Turkish riviera is a great choice if you're a little bored of the beaches in Spain - with a number of excellent resorts to choose from.
Turkey, similarly to Greece has a very rich history, and there are plenty of old ruins to visit - we particuarly love the Library of Celsus, which you can find at Ephesus.

4. Iceland
3 hr 15 min
Why?
Iceland is one of our favourite Brexit-proof destinations for 2021 - great for those who love the outdoors and adventure.
When to go
The decision on when to visit Iceland usually comes down to whether you want to visit when it's sunny and (by Iceland standards) warm or whether you want to see the northern lights. Both certainly have their appeal! Icelandic summers (May - August) are lush and green, the days are long and you'll get to see the numerous waterfalls in full flow. By contrast Icelandic winters (November to March) are a cosy adventure, the days are short and the northern lights are well worth braving the cold. There is of course the option to visit in autumn, where the temperatures aren't so cold, the days aren't as short and there's the chance you may spot somer northern lights - but there's no guarantees.
Don't miss
One of the most popular routes is the Golden Circle - this loop drive will take you past most of the most recongisable sites, including Gullfoss, Þingvellir and the Blue Lagoon. If you're limited for time then this is the best place to start when planning your trip. But don't be afraid to leave the well travelled path and explore some of Icelands more remote, less visited regions.

5. UK short breaks
Varies, could be a short walk
Why?
If 2020 taught us anything it's that there a lot of beautiful places to explore here in the UK - sometimes just outside your door.
When to go
The great thing about a staycation is that it is easier to fit in short breaks throughout the year - who doesn't love a long weekend? Especially if you string it together with a bank holiday.
Of course the summer is a great time to visit the host of UK attractions on offer, and lots of theme parks will do early booking spring offers when the parks re-open for the season.
Don't miss
If you're looking for something to entertain the family then why not head to Legoland - they're opening a new mythical beast themed 'land' in 2021.
Or you could rent a campervan and explore the untamed nature in Scotland by driving the North Coast 500.
Wherever you live there's sure to be something to explore just round the corner!
6. Andalucia
2 hrs 55 min
Why?
The tourism minister for Andalucia said in 2020 that this year tourists would be covered with free covid insurance. While that plan has been delayed later in 2021 by current travel restrictions, Andalucia's thoughful eagerness to attract visitors gives added peace of mind once this beautiful region of Spain opens back up to tourists.
When to go
Andalucia is one of the hottest regions in Europe, with temperatures peaking June to September. If you're a sun worshipper then we are sure you'll love it! If you're more senstive to heat then we recommend visiting in spring or autumn - when temperatures are a little cooler meaning you can get out and explore.
Don't miss
There's a lot to do in this region, so it depends where you base yourself. Most people tending to head to either Sevilla, Malaga or Granada.
From our travels here we recommend a visit to the Alhambra, a hilltop fortification near Granada. Take time to wander the streets of Sevilla, a beautiful town with a UNESCO World Heritage site at the Catedral de Sevilla.
There's also something incredibly appealing about wandering the smaller villages, with their cobbled streets, white wash buildings and beautiful bougainvillaea in spring - somewhere like Frigiliana which is between Malaga and Granada.
7. Japan
11 hr 50 min
Why?
Tokyo was meant to be home to the 2020 Olympic games, but obviously these got postponed. The games are currently scheduled for the end of July 2021, and assuming they go ahead as planned that's all the excuse we need to want to visit again!
When to go
If you are planning on attending the Olympics then you'll want to head there end of July - but this isn't necessairly the best time to visit Japan as this is in the rainy season. One of the most popular sights is the cherry blossom, and if you want to see that then you'll want to travel in spring (between March and May), but bear in mind this is the peak season so can get crowded.
If you want to see the iconic Mount Fuji, then it's worth noting it's actually quite rare to visit on a day when it's cloud free! Your best bet is between Novemember and February. In fact we love a winter trip to Japan as it's a great alternative to the typical Alpine skiing experience.
Don't miss
As we said above, the cherry blossom is really a magical sight - but if you want to see it then you need to plan in advance. They only bloom for one week and the timing of this varies from south to north - do your research and plan to accommodate this.
If you're visiting in winter then why not try catch a glimpse of the snow monkeys (Japanese macaque) bathing in a hot spring? As with any tourist attraction that relies on local wildlife please ensure you are being respectful and look for those experiences which value conservation.

Travel Guide | Tokyo
When it comes to travelling Tokyo, rest assured that we've been there, done that and we've bought that proverbial tee-shirt. It's a foodie's paradise, haven of pop culture, and has the highest urban population in the world with nearly 38 million living in Tokyo.
8. Albania
3 hrs
Why?
There are few 'undiscovered' European destinations left, especially as more tourists now venture into Eastern Europe. So we think this small Balkan country is an excellent choice if you like to visit somewhere a little less known. And at time of writing, even with much of the EU closed to UK visitors and the UK in lockdown, Albania would be perfectly happy to accept UK visitors with just a recent, negative PCR test.
When to go
Though Albania is small, it packs a lot in, with a Mediterranean coastline and a mountainous north. If you're heading to the coast then temperatures are pleasant from May to October - though head there at the beginning or end of this to miss the real scorching heat. Or you can head to the mountains in the winter for the snow, and discover a new skiing spot!
Don't miss
Albania has some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe, and they are no where near as busy as their counterparts in more touristed destinations! We recommend taking a boat trip out to Ksamil Islands, in the Albania Riviera - white sands and turquiose waters, you'd be forgiven for thinking you've been dropped into the Carribbean!

9. Chlie
15 hrs
Why?
Okay, don't let the flight time put you off. Chile is a beautiful, diverse country and it really has it all. 6000 miles long and 100 wide with mountains, lakes, vineyards, salt flats, beaches, moonscapes... the list goes on. Direct flights to the capital Santiago were in place before lockdown so it's easier than ever to get to. Recent political shifts saw a huge popular mandate to throw out the old Pinochet-era constitution, setting Chile up for a new period of optimism and reform. And the geography means that, while it'll take you days if not weeks to drive the length of the place, you can comfortably journey from the sea at Valparaiso to the Andes in a day, taking in Pablo Neruda's house on the way.
When to go
As Chile runs so far south to north it stretches across a number of different climate zones - so the 'best' time to visit does vary depending in region. The busiest months run from November through March as this is the summer season, though don't expect it to be warm if you're visiting Patagonia!
Don't miss
There's really so much to love about Chile is tempting to just say in general don't miss visiting Chile in your lifetime. But, if you have to pin us down then we'd say a visit to Patagonia is a must, you'll be blown away by the vistas of Torres del Paine. We also highly recommend a trip to Salar de Atacama - visiting these salt flats almost feels like visiting another world!
Book your holiday extras early.
It pays to book your airport parking, airport hotel or your lounge as soon as you book your flights. Prices usually go up nearer the date you fly, and last year Holiday Extras saved our airport parking customers £100 each on average when they pre-booked their airport parking instead of paying on the day.
10. Ireland
1 hr 20 min
Why?
If you'd rather stay a little closer to home then the Emerald Isle has plenty to discover - plus it's one of our Brexit-proof destinations for 2021.
When to go
There's no surprises in terms of climate here - you'll know what to expect. In general it will be busiest in summer - so if you want avoid the crowds go in the shoulder seasons, March to May or September to November. St Patrick's day is in mid-March, so if you want to party with the Irish this would be the time to go.
Don't miss
If you're heading for a city break - then obviously Temple Bar in Dublin is one of the places to go, and you have to try some Guiness whilst you're there.
We suggest you take some time to really explore Ireland however, and get out of the city. One of the most popular sites in Ireland are the Cliffs of Moher - about a 3hr drive from Dublin. These impressive cliffs overlook the wild Atlantic ocean and you might recognise them from a scene in Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.
11. Dubai
7 hrs
Why?
We were lucky in that Dubai was the last place we travelled before lockdown came - and we've been waiting to shout about it ever since. It's one of the holiday destinations that, but for the UK's national lockdown, we could still visit in January 2021. Plus the World Expo is being held in Dubai in October 2021.

Dubai: 14 must-watch travel tips
When to go
Dubai gets hot, and we mean hot! In the summer months temperatures will soar above 40°. Now that might be your thing, but in general was recommend visiting between December and March as the temperatures a little cooler which makes going out and about much more comfortable.
Don't miss
There are a number of famous sights in Dubai - the world's tallest building the Burj Khalifa, the Palm Jumeirah and the Dubai mall. Dubai is also a great location for families, with plenty of waterparks, theme parks and attractions to visit.
12. Rwanda
4 hr 15 min
Why?
If you want to head somewhere a bit different this year then Rwanda is our choice. They are leading the way for sustainable tourism in Africa and there's incredible biodiversity - and one of the best places to see gorillas in the wild.
When to go
For many when to go is dictated by when you can get one of the coverted gorilla trekking permits. The busiest time is June to September - when it is warmest and most importantly driest. You are more likely to get a premit in the off season - so we recommend trying to catch the end or beginning of the rainy seasons, around December or May.
Don't miss
A visit to Rwanda really isn't complete without seeing the mountain gorillas, but we understand this can be expensive. What we love about Rwanda however is that you know the premit cost goes to their considerable conservation efforts, in fact gorilla numbers have increased by as much as 25% in recent years.
It's not just about the gorillas however, Volcanoes National Park is well worth a visit in it's own right. You won't be sad you came.
13. Slovenia
2 hrs 5 min
Why?
Slovenia is our sustainable pick for 2021 - they are leading with way with responsible tourism. Slovenia has everything from waterfalls and mountains to clean cities and a stunning Venetian-esque coastline.
When to go
Slovenia is similar to Albania in that it has a mediterranean coast to visit in the summer months and the mountains to visit in the winter. The busiest months are the summer months, June to September - to avoid the crowds we recommend visiting in Spring, this is also when vegetation is at its lushest.
Don't miss
Probably the most photographed spot in Slovenia is Lake Bled - but it is with good reason. Whether you visit the church on the island in the middle of the emerald waters, take a swim in the thermal waters or visit Bled Castle we definitely thing it's something not to miss.

14. New Zealand
24 hrs
Why?
Okay, again we know it's a pretty hefty flight time (take it as a chance to catch up on that TV show you've been meaning to watch!) but you have to trust us when we say it's well worth it. Not only did New Zealand handle the covid crisis amazingly well, the country is one of the most beautiful (and friendly) around.
When to go
Being in the Southern Hemisphere the seasons are opposite to ours - so whilst everyone in the UK is pulling on their winter coats you can be flying off to enjoy a second summer. November through March are the warmest (busiest) seasons, and a word of warning this is also when the dreaded sandflies come out in some of the most popular regions. We recommend timing your visit for either Spring or Autumn, it'll be quieter and there'll be less bugs!
Don't miss
There's a lot to recommend for New Zealand, and if you're a Lord of the Rings fan you'll be in heaven! Some of our favourites though: drive through Arthur's Pass, visit the hot springs in Rotorua, take the Shotover jet in Queenstown, see the lupins bloom at the Church of the Good Shephard and take a boat tour down Milford Sound.
15. British Virgin Islands
8 hrs 10 mins
Why?
Who doesn't love a tropical island getaway? After the year we've all had we'd say you deserve it.
When to go
If you're looking for somewhere warm there's not really a bad time to go - the average temperature is 27° after all! The most popular time to visit is between February - March as this is the dry season. If you want to avoid the crowds then it will be slightly quieter in the shoulder seasons - December to January and April to May. If you want a real deal though head there off season - it will be wetter but in general the rain is usually short and heavy.
Don't miss
Even if all you do is relax on a beach with a cocktail and take the occasional swim then you'll be having a good time! The BVIs are of course famous for being home to Richard Bransons private island - Necker Island, so if you have a spare $36,000 for a double room then that's always an option!
16. Mexico
10 hrs (to Cancun)
Why?
Mexico is a vast and diverse country - with vibrant history and culture. There's beaches, ancient ruins, jungles, deserts, mountains... you name it.
When to go
Weather does vary from region to region, but in general we recommend visiting between December and April when it is driest. Though if you plan to visit the Mayan Riviera, such as Cancun, then summer is the time to go and the rainfall is usually short and sharp.
Don't miss
If you visit for the beaches in Cancun then take some time to head inland to Chichén Itzá an important ancient Mayan monument. You can also visit the Sacred Cenote nearby - for a dip in the emerald waters.
On the opposite coast and with a 'no shoes, no shirt, no problem' vibe is the beach resort of Cabo San Lucas - at the tip of the Baja peninsula.
