MJ The Musical review | What we thought

The verdict on MJ The Musical? You can't beat it, says one of our theatre experts – here's their review of this electrifying musical about the King of Pop.

A thrilling celebration of Jackson's mega-hits

From the electrifying opening Beat It, MJ The Musical is a non-stop party celebrating the iconic career of Michael Jackson. Set in 1992, the story unfolds as Jackson, played on our visit by the phenomenal Myles Frost, grants a rare interview to an MTV crew eager to learn about his upcoming Dangerous tour – a critical endeavour that finds him grappling with debt.

The narrative is ingeniously confined to a rehearsal space, where the MTV crew gets an exclusive peek into the intimate world of Michael Jackson. This setup provides a unique perspective, allowing the audience to experience the behind-the-scenes dynamics and candid moments that shaped the King of Pop.

Myles Frost's portrayal of Michael Jackson was nothing short of transformative. From his physical appearance and distinctive half-whisper to his signature stance, Frost embodied Jackson in every aspect. His performance was more than mere imitation – he captured the essence of the man behind the music.

The musical's structure cleverly uses flashbacks to delve into Jackson's past, starting with a joyful memory of performing with his siblings in The Jackson 5. The medley of The Love You Save, I Want You Back and ABC not only showcases their classic hits but also highlights the deep bond and complex relationships within the Jackson family. These flashbacks provide a nuanced look at Jackson's upbringing, contrasting loving moments with his mother against the turbulent interactions with his father and brothers.

Spectacular choreography and staging

Directed and choreographed by ballet legend Christopher Wheeldon, the choreography is nothing short of spectacular. True to Michael Jackson's legacy, the dance sequences are meticulously crafted and feature plenty of his iconic moonwalking. The precision and energy of the choreography elevate the performance, making it a visual feast.

One of the musical's standout features is its innovative use of the ensemble cast. Actors seamlessly transition between multiple roles, with even backup dancers stepping into significant supporting characters. This was exemplified by Ashley Zhangazha, who convincingly portrayed both Jackson's manager and his father, each with distinct and compelling personas. The expert use of body language in these transitions enhances the believability and depth of each character, making the transformations feel effortless and authentic.

In a unique touch that sets this production apart, the band is transported on and off the stage from the sides as needed. This dynamic staging element enhances the experience, bringing the music closer to the audience in a way that few theatre productions manage. The set design reaches its pinnacle during the Thriller number. With a backdrop of vivid reds and purples, dramatic lighting, and swirling smoke, the stage transforms into a scene straight out of the iconic 1982 music video. As zombies dance and Jackson takes centre stage, the audience is transported into the heart of one of the most memorable music videos in history.
