Eat like an athlete | Where to eat in Lanzarote
As recommended by Sam Sills.
We joined iQFoil athlete Sam Sills when he was training in Lanzarote and, aside from windsurfing, turns out he's got a bit of passion for good food too. So we asked him for some recommendations and put together this list of the best places to eat in and around Playa Blanca, Lanzarote.
Arabella's
Right on Marina Rubicon's waterfront, every meal at Arabella's comes with an accompaniment of marina views and, if you befriend the team, perhaps a cool, free glass of cava.
The menu is all about local ingredients in fusion-style dishes – think Buddha bowls, Iberian pork tenderloin along with classics like spaghetti bolognese and burgers. There's a full kids' menu too. And for grown ups a long list of cocktails to choose from – you can even order them served on a tree (yes, a tree) with a very OTT sparkler coming out of the top.
The whole place is themed around the jungle, with lots of animal prints and sculptures, plants and garish decor. It's super fun and well worth a visit.

Another one in Marina Rubicon – Primario Gastrobar is set a bit back from the seafront in a quiet little nook on a hill. With mostly outdoor seating, it's sheltered from the wind and in the evening it's lit up by a canopy of fairy lights. How romantic!
Sam Sills described the food here as 'posh tapas', which is true, but we found there was loads more on the menu too. Local ingredients are once again the heroes of the menu, and they're used in creative ways. Smoked Atlantic salmon arranged into the shape of a rose, traditional Canarian wrinkled potatoes with their duo of mojo sauces, chargrilled squash and even gyoza. It's an eclectic culinary treat.

Mumbai Masala
Because nothing screams 'holiday in the Canaries' more than an Indian curry house by the sea. Jokes aside, if you want something a bit different to tapas, fish and wrinkled potatoes then you can't go wrong with a good, authentic Indian restaurant.
Mumbai Masala is actually a small chain that has a couple of restaurants on Lanzarote and one across the way in Tenerife. We think the popularity might have something to do with the number of British tourists that visit the island every year – a curry and a pint is a crowd pleaser wherever you are in the world.
From kormas to vindaloos, they've got a full menu of Indian favourites and then some.
Brisa Marina
If you're after some real local Canarian food then head to Brisa Marina in Playa Blanca. It's in a popular tourist area but that doesn't make it any less authentic. The menu is built mainly around fish and seafood of various different forms, with vegetable paella and chicken also an option for the not-so-fanatical fish fans at the table.
The menu is actually huge and it can be a bit intimidating to get through, with everything from ceviche and octopus carpaccio to tuna tartare and lobster. And, of course, sangria by the jug.
For the freshest and tastiest, go for the catch of the day. It was sea bass when we visited and it was *chef's kiss*.

Kamezí Deli & Bistro
Dining at Kamezí is an experience that you won't forget in a hurry. Sure the food is local, but it's so local that they call it 'zero-kilometre' dining. The dishes change with the seasons but the high level of service and dedication to the craft stays the same throughout the year.
If fine dining is more your bag then you'll find it at Kamezí, and one of the best ways to experience it is with their taster menus. You can choose either 9 or 12 courses and you can have the dishes expertly paired with wine to give you the best experience possible.
It's a bit on the pricey side but if you're after some proper, high-end food then this is probably the best place on the island for it. You are on holiday, so why not treat yourself?
