Skiing Norway

The Norwegians claim to have been skiing for 4,000 years so they should know a thing or two about it.

Guaranteed snow, fresh powder, a lengthy season lasting from early November to early May and uncrowded, spacious family-friendly resorts make Norway a winter sports paradise. It's also a refreshing alternative to mainland Europe's often hectic ski destinations.

There are numerous resorts to explore in the country where skiing first became a sport. Hemsedal is Norway's premiere ski and snowboard destination, set in the idyllic Hallingdal Valley. Skeikampen is one of the most family-friendly ski centres in Scandinavia and is perfect for younger children. Voss is very popular with British visitors and offers quiet slopes and genuine Norwegian hospitality. Geilo in the 'Winterland' region is a friendly, charming village. Host of the 1994 Winter Olympics, Lillehammer / Hafjell is one of Norway's most established and well-equipped resorts.

Norway's reputation as expensive is deserved but service and quality are high. The country provides the usual après ski opportunities as well as tobogganing, dog sledding, horse drawn sleigh rides and outdoor ice skating. The latest craze for adrenaline junkies is snowkiting, where speeds of 100 kilometres per hour can be reached with the aid of a kite and no fear.

It's just a two hour flight to Norway and most of the ski resorts are located in the south of the country within easy reach. There are numerous daily departures from UK airports including Stansted, Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Liverpool, and Newcastle. Norwegian, Scandinavian, Ryanair and British Airways all fly to Norway.

DFDS Seaways offers a range of ski packages sailing from Newcastle upon Tyne to Bergen.
