David Norris
Chief Growth Officer
David Norris is the Chief Growth Officer at Holiday Extras. He joined the company in 2016 as Chief Operating Officer and transitioned to Chief Growth Officer in 2020.
My team focuses on attracting new and existing customers, communicating the value we offer. We aim to help travellers have less hassle and more holiday, using Holiday Extras for every trip they take.
My Role at Holiday Extras
I lead our customer marketing teams. We have our own teams for SEO, PPC, Email, PR, Creative and Editorial. As a member of our board, I also look at the trading performance of the business and our future growth strategy. I aim to create the conditions for growth across our business and I'm a passionate advocate for AI, in terms of what it can help us do for improving the experience of our customers and of our teams. I was humbled to win AI Innovator of the year at the 2024 AI Summit in London.
Life Before Holiday Extras
I started my career in tour operating, leading operations teams at Eurocamp and Simply Travel; first overseas and then in the UK. From the year 2000 onwards I felt the draw of the internet and worked with various online travel companies, including a role at Expedia as Website Operations Director. I then worked in growth stage startups as a COO (Bookatable, HouseTrip and IOVOX). Prior to joining Holiday Extras I was in Venture Capital, investing and helping early stage companies get started at Forward Partners. Strangely, I have a BA (Hons) degree in Theology and Religious Studies from Manchester University. More relevant - a Diploma in Company Direction from the Institute of Directors.
Life Aside From Work
I love to keep active and enjoy cycling, running and indoor rock climbing. In the winter I'll always find a way to go skiing and in recent years I have done an annual ski touring trip to remote parts of the Alps. My four children keep my wife and I busy at home and to relax I'll be learning to play the guitar (badly) or reading a book.
What's my perfect hassle-free holiday?
Hassle free for me is when travel providers are on time and we don't queue. We'll often drive for our holiday and whilst many people see a road trip as hard work, I see it as an adventure. Needless to say, clear roads and clear skies make for a good road trip. If I'm flying, I like to stay away from the crowds and get through formalities quickly, so fast track and lounges have a real appeal.
Inspiration
I'm in awe of adventurers such as Amy Johnson, Ranulph Fiennes, Ernest Shackleton and Ellen Macarthur and their determination to take on seriously challenging adventures and adversity. I find inspiration for new ideas by meeting new people and reading - I always have a book on the go and a queue on my shelf.
